Fabrics of Translocality
In their photographic and intermedial works, Ula Ahmed, Masixole Ncevu and Roxana Rios explore the complex entanglements between space, identity, and history. At the heart of their inquiries are experiences and forms of belonging that do not adhere to fixed geographical borders but instead emerge within the interstices of movement, migration, and memory. In this talk, the artists will share insights to their work.
Ula Ahmed is a self-taught photographer from Sudan and one of the first prominent female voices in the country’s contemporary photography scene. She began photographing in 2016, and in 2021 her photographs were exhibited at the Rencontres d’Arles, marking her international debut. She continues to shape Sudanese visual storytelling with subtle power.
Masixole Ncevu studied photography at the Vega School of Brand Leadership, where he received the Advanced Photography Award and the Samsung Excellent Student Award in 2015. He was a finalist for the August Sander Prize (Germany, 2018) and is a two-time nominee for the Joop Swart Masterclass (2019, 2020). His work has been exhibited at institutions such as Galerie Jochen Hempel, the Natural History Museum in Geneva, Galerie NegPos (Nîmes), and SOSESAME Gallery (Johannesburg). In 2025, Ncevu published his first book, Sense of Space, which was longlisted for the Best Book Design award by the Stiftung Buchkunst.
After completing a dual degree in photography and performative arts at HGB Leipzig and AdBK Nuremberg, Roxana Rios graduated with a postgraduate diploma in 2023. Since then, her work has been shown at institutions such as the Museum Folkwang in Essen, the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Leipzig, FOTOHOF Salzburg, Foto Arsenal Vienna, Fotomuseum Winterthur, and the Deichtorhallen Hamburg. In 2024, Rios received the Contemporary German Photography Grant from the Krupp Foundation, and in 2025 was selected as a FUTURES talent by the Triennial of Photography Hamburg.
