About the project
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1947, Gwendolyn Phillips was the first Black female photographer to be employed by the Los Angeles Times on a permanent basis. During the 1960s and 1970s, she amassed an impressive photographic portfolio. Due to the mounting tensions that followed the American civil rights movement, Phillips relocated to Europe and, in 1972, moved to Hamburg, where she worked for publications such as Zeit Magazine and ran her own photography studio.
Drawing on her photographic works, personal documents, and audiovisual contributions, this exhibition contextualises her work within contemporary feminism, Black perspectives in photography, and diasporic narratives.
